Pet clothing initially emerged as a niche product designed primarily to keep pets warm. With the rise of the pet economy, the role of pets has gradually shifted from "functional companions" to "family members," accompanied by a trend toward the "humanization" of consumption habits.

Since the 2020s, international fashion brands have increasingly ventured into pet collections, driving the market toward greater fashionability and premium positioning. Brands such as Gucci, Burberry, Zara, Nike's Jordan, Adidas, and The North Face have all entered the pet apparel sector; notably, Adidas launched its "Trefoil" pet collection in May 2025.

The domestic Chinese market has diversified, with specialized brands like Boqii, Crazy Puppy (Fengkuang Xiaogou), Tumaomao, and Petstar rising to prominence through e-commerce channels. Among them, brands like Tumaomao incorporate traditional Chinese aesthetic elements, such as *Hanfu* and *qipao* styles. The emergence of DIY pet clothing workshops-exemplified by Shen Mingzhe's sewing studio in Hangzhou-reflects consumer demand for personalized and experiential consumption. As a key hub for the pet economy, Hangzhou's Gongshu District saw the total scale of pet-related industries exceed 500 million yuan in 2025.

By around 2025, pet clothing had become a rapidly growing segment of the pet economy, with the Chinese market reaching a scale of 12.95 billion yuan. It has also become a significant sector for cross-border e-commerce exports, with Chinese-made products leveraging supply chain advantages to enter the global market. From January to August 2024, export sales of Chinese autumn/winter pet apparel grew by approximately 35% year-on-year.
